Glucose

Low Glucose in your blood test result?

Low fasting glucose (hypoglycemia, below 70 mg/dL) can cause symptoms such as shakiness, sweating, or confusion. It can occur with certain medications, prolonged fasting, or, rarely, hormone conditions.

Don't guess from one flagged result.

Don't read Glucose alone

A low Glucose result is only one part of the picture. It is usually interpreted together with related markers, your reference range, previous results, medications, symptoms, and clinical history.

What is Glucose?

Blood glucose measures the concentration of sugar in the blood. Fasting glucose is measured after at least 8 hours without eating and is used to screen for diabetes and prediabetes.

Fasting glucose is one of three standard tests for diabetes screening, alongside the two-hour glucose tolerance test and HbA1c. All three measure blood sugar regulation differently and complement each other.

Why might Glucose be low?

Low fasting glucose (hypoglycemia, below 70 mg/dL) can cause symptoms such as shakiness, sweating, or confusion. It can occur with certain medications, prolonged fasting, or, rarely, hormone conditions.

This information is educational. A single out-of-range result is rarely the whole picture — a healthcare professional can interpret your numbers alongside your overall health and history.

Context questions that matter

  • →Was this result slightly or clearly outside the reference range?
  • →Were related markers also high or low?
  • →Is this new compared with previous tests?
  • →Could recent illness, exercise, fasting, alcohol, supplements, or medication affect it?
  • →Do you have symptoms that should be discussed with a clinician?

Markers often reviewed together with Glucose

Clinicians rarely look at one number in isolation. These markers usually accompany Glucose on a glucose & metabolic panel and help put the result in context.

  • HbA1cGlycated Hemoglobin
  • Triglycerides
  • HDLHDL Cholesterol
  • InsulinFasting Insulin

Lifestyle considerations

  • •Regular physical activity improves insulin sensitivity and helps maintain healthy glucose levels
  • •Choosing fibre-rich, lower-glycaemic foods reduces post-meal glucose spikes

Questions to ask your doctor

  • →Does this result match my HbA1c, fasting glucose and other metabolic markers?
  • →Was this test fasting, after a meal, or affected by recent illness, sleep, stress or medication?
  • →Should we follow this Glucose result over time instead of reading one value alone?

Don't guess from one flagged result.

Start with the most relevant panel and see how your markers fit together in plain English.

Frequently asked questions

What does low Glucose mean?

+

Low fasting glucose (hypoglycemia, below 70 mg/dL) can cause symptoms such as shakiness, sweating, or confusion. It can occur with certain medications, prolonged fasting, or, rarely, hormone conditions.

What is Glucose?

+

Blood glucose measures the concentration of sugar in the blood. Fasting glucose is measured after at least 8 hours without eating and is used to screen for diabetes and prediabetes.

Should glucose and HbA1c be compared?

+

Yes. Glucose reflects a single moment, while HbA1c reflects an average across roughly the last 2–3 months. Reading both together gives more context than either alone, especially when they disagree.

Can food, sleep or stress affect this result?

+

Recent meals, sleep quality, acute stress, illness and some medications can all shift metabolic markers. The fasting state at the draw and the trend across previous tests matter as much as a single number.

What supports healthy Glucose levels?

+

Regular physical activity improves insulin sensitivity and helps maintain healthy glucose levels. Choosing fibre-rich, lower-glycaemic foods reduces post-meal glucose spikes
